3 Day Workshop

THIS WORKSHOP RETURNS TO VANCOUVER JULY 2021

The Art of Facilitation: holding space for others so they become stewards of their experience and agents of their art-making.

Wendy vanden Heuvel and Raïna von Waldenburg unpack the Grotowski work from the perspective of the facilitator. In this intimate workshop participants will be exposed to fundamental principles, philosophies, skills, and forms that we as facilitators use to create safe space and open creative flow for other people.

Join us daily for this in-depth training at the historic Western Front in the spacious EDAM Dance studio (with the smoothest wooden floor you've ever felt!). Praxis includes lectures/sharing and demos by faculty, group discussions, facilitation-practicums, analysis and feedback.

SOURCE

• Transmissivity: you as source (always, in everything you do!)
• Intuitive Navigating: what parts of you to bring into the work. When and why?
• Transparency: I Am One Who, calling yourself out while facilitating
• Collaboration: working with yourself while working with others

SEEING/LISTENING/READING

• Listening with your whole body: mirror neurons, empathy
• How to read a human being: what are you looking for and why?
• Diagnostics: perceiving psycho-physical patterns
• Homeopathy: recognizing energetic G spots; material as medicine
• Learning to read the room
• Facilitating feedback

NON-DOING

• Via Negativa: why “teaching or fixing others” is not the point
• The importance of asking questions (and resist giving answers)
• Embrace the unknown: fear & loathing together
• Flexibility/Structure: letting go of ideas/modifying plans
• Working with paradox: if a thing is true then so is its opposite
• Letting go of narratives

THE Wild West

• I Am NOT One Who!!! How to work with resistance
• Creating safe and playful containers for violent impulses
• Fierce compassion vs being “nice”
• Action in the work: precision and detail, staying on task
• Diving In: partnering with students while they work
• Trauma in the body: tread gently… when in doubt, safety first
• Pig in the Mud/Aesthetic Distance: the role of feelings in art-making
• PLAY is VITAL

There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. If you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, nor how valuable it is, nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly, to keep the channel open.–Martha Graham
